Tunnels

There's an element of trust when you step into a tunnel, especially a dark, windy one (as some tend to be). One can imagine a car (or train!) barrelling down the opposite direction. Is someone lurking around that bend? The ceiling may fall. Or my worst fear, a sudden surge of water that leaves you gasping for air. Today, I entered dozens of tunnels. But not without some trepidation. Now i never actually thought my tunnel would be submerged under water, but as water trinkled down to form puddles underneath, the thought crossed my mind that it could. Often, it's not practical to go over or around a mountain. The only way from A to B is through. And while we believe we'll get through unscathed, we don't really know for sure. So we step, one foot in front of the other. And as long as we keep moving, we emerge on the other side. Safe. Today, I would glance back at the darkness through which i had travelled and a small smile would creep across my face. For as silly as my fears may be, I made it through. Now i get to breathe easily. Until the next tunnel.
